Reversing the Epidemic of Insomnia

Climbing into bed with a tired body but a not so tired mind is the way of life for many people every night. Some people dread even going to bed for fear of a repeat of the restless tossing and turning they?ve experienced in past nights. Of course most of the time history repeats itself because where you focus your thoughts is exactly what shows up for you. Do you find yourself raiding the refrigerator or turning on the TV to pass time as you prowl your quiet house while everyone else enjoys the sleep zone? Or do you simply get up and do more work? After all, why waste the time so at least you can be productive if you aren?t sleeping. Then the morning requires some stiff coffee or other stimulants to get you moving. Does this describe you?

Massage Therapy may be one of the oldest and simplest forms of medical care. It has been practiced in Eastern cultures continually since ancient times. The Ancient Egyptians painted scenes of people being massaged in their tombs and the Chinese have books dating back to 2,700 BC that recommend breathing exercises and massage as treatments for chills and fevers.

Massage therapy, uses the application of various techniques to the muscular structure and soft tissues of the body. This can include applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, vibrations, rocking, frictions, kneading and compression through the use of mostly hands, forearms and elbows. Therapists also use stretching and joint movements to help increase range of motion.

While stress is unavoidable, minimizing stress or reducing it to an acceptable level is a must for health, wellness, longevity, and productivity. Stress leads to numerous physiologic effects. Stress activates our flight or fight nervous system called the sympathetic nervous system. This activation leads to an increased heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, sweating (especially the palms), dilation of the eyes, and muscle tension. Further increase in our stress level will cause poor concentration, irritability, mood swings, and reduced productivity.

One of the most difficult aspects of today’s society is the sheer mass of stress which most of us experience. It seems almost that everything conspires against good quality relaxation.

In fact, the pace and demands of modern life seems to be an obstacle to many possibly good things. Our health would be better if we could exercise more. We would not have to worry so much about weight loss, aging, disease, ill health, and stress if we could only find a little more time. In time, which we don’t have much of anyway, we even begin to become stressed about all the stress we are under and our apparent lack of ability to do much about it!

When we recognize that learning is a lifelong experience, we can then accept that occasional gaps or feelings of inadequacy may surface. These feelings of being “less than” or “not worthy” may begin with negative thoughts, such as “I’m stupid, I can’t do it, No one likes me, I am inadequate, etc.” These thoughts can quickly become deeply ingrained belief patterns. Negative thought patterns often lead to negative behavior patterns and negative behavior patterns will affect your life by surfacing in such areas as school or work performance, relationships, attitude, anger, inability to focus, concentrate or emotional outbursts, weight issues, stress, anxiety or panic attacks - and that is only some of the myriad of aftereffects of negative indoctrination and adaptations.

There are things in life that one cannot escape from. For some of us, eczema seems to be on that list. This skin problem can be caused by many things such as allergy to food or cloth, an imbalance of fatty acids and even stress.

My two daughters are already an example of eczema victims who get it because of different reasons. My eldest daughter gets it when she is stressed out. If there’s an upcoming exam that she knows she’s not well-prepared with, I can almost guarantee you that her anxiety will extend to her skin and a flare-up will soon be our problem again. My second daughter gets her eczema from food. You can expect a flare up extending to the skin on the face after a few hours of eating just a leg of chicken.
