According to the WHO World Health Statistics 2007, “The exact number of people living with HIV is unknown. …the size of the epidemic had been overestimated previously but also it is still growing.” The present estimate is that 39.5 million people are infected with HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus, including two million children in Africa.
