Each year two million Americans acquire hospital infections and over 90,000 of those people will die. This is an alarming statistic to say the least. Hospitals are where one goes to get well not feel worse. But unfortunately, while a hospital is a place of healing it can also be a safe haven for germs.

Success and failure are only ideas. What looks, in one moment, to be a huge success, can easily take on the odor of failure. Success for one can often be interpreted, by another, as that person?s biggest failure. So much depends upon one?s own interpretation of the events. If you look hard enough, you will always find ways to turn one into the other.

Traditional Native American craftspeople often integrate a ?flaw? into the artistic patterns they work with. It is to remind them and others there is nothing that is perfect. Within the context of these imperfections, perfection is attained. Perhaps the power of the flaw is to reflect the perfect concept of balance ? all is ever-changing.

The Pump. An insulin pump is a medical device continuously delivering insulin under the skin through a catheter. It?s usually connects somewhere in the waist area. There?s a new generation of insulin pumps, called a patch pump. Currently patch pumps are only available from OmniPod. Patch pumps adhere directly to the skin with no catheter tubing showing. It then infuses insulin directly under the skin.

Either pump delivers insulin at an hourly rate. For instance, the rate might be 1.1 units an hour. However, the pump delivers different rates at different times of day depending on the patient?s insulin infusion (or basal) rates that are programmed into the pump.

Every healthcare organization has different policies and procedures relating to the handling of healthcare appeals or appeals of adverse determinations. While state and federal regulations dictate in large part how these appeals are handled, each healthcare payer has much leeway in determining exactly how to deal with them. Many companies have first-level appeals or second-level appeals that are done inside their own organization and use the IRO as a third-level appeals entity. Other healthcare payers actually send all of their appeals directly out to IROs immediately as their first-level response. Some payers use the IRO?s determination as binding upon their decision making process as a matter of best practice. Other health insurance payers consider the IRO independent medical review to be another input to the decision making process but reserve the right to make a final determination in house.

It would be easy if all drugs fit into categories named after the seven dwarves (Sleepy, Sneezy, Dopey, Happy?etc). Unfortunately, the naming of new drugs is well short of a fairytale process. Drugs, regardless of prescription or over-the-counter status, lack a coherent brand-naming standard. The seemingly random production of brand name drugs not only prevents consumer (and physician) efficacy but also obstructs many helpful drugs from the view of the target market.

What does MRSA mean? MRSA stands for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or multiple resistance Staphylococcus aureus. You may sometimes see it referred to as Golden Staph or just plain ‘Staph’. Staph is a microorganism commonly found on the body that occasionally causes infection. As a matter of fact, about 3 out of 10 people have MRSA bacteria living on their skin. Methicillin is an antibiotic that has been used to treat Staph. MRSA is a strain of Staph resistant to methicillin and some other antibiotics. It is therefore more difficult to treat than normal Staph.
