You’re just finishing your Saturday morning bike ride. It’s been a long busy week at work and the ride really helped you blow off some steam. As you reach down to get your water bottle you feel a sharp snap in your back, like you’ve just been stabbed. You’re barely able to get back in the house and on the couch. The rest of the weekend is spent resting, taking pain relievers and trying to get better. By Monday, you feel well enough to go to work but just as your back pain is beginning to ease up, your leg feels like it’s been stuck in an electrical socket. You think you’d rather just have the back pain; you just want that leg pain to go away.

Vitamin D and osteoporosis are an osteoporosis treatment combination that many healthcare practitioners closely follow.

The body requires adequate calcium intake as well as an adequate intake of vitamin D in order to maintain strong, dense and healthy bones.

Vitamin D alone is not sufficient for the treatment of osteoporosis. Nor are vitamin D and calcium alone and adequate treatment choice.

But vitamin D is an important component in the treatment of osteoporosis for many reasons. It helps with the absorption of calcium from the intestines.

If you suffer from persistent back pain, it may seem like there is no relief in sight. You suffer day in and day out. It has affected your home life, your job and even your sex life. Perhaps you’ve been to a doctor and he can’t find anything wrong with you. This is probably the worst thing that happens to us knowing something is wrong even when the doctor can’t find anything.

Anyone who spends much time face to face with a PC every day has a secret dream of “the Chair”, with a capital C. The dream is of a chair that fits them perfectly, in fact is handmade for them, and is tailored to their body shape. The chair will help them to be able to concentrate on what they’re doing for longer because it will reduce the neck aches and back pains that normally accompany long stretches in front of the PC. Until, fairly recently these were only dreams, even if they were exceptionally fervent. Then there was the advent of publicly available ergonomic chairs.

SLIPPED DISC

95% of back pain is a result of a slipped disc. The spine consists of 24 bones called vertebrae which sit on top of one another to form a column. Each vertebra has a cylindrical body in front with a wishbone-like structure sticking out behind forming the knobbly bits that can be felt down the backbone. Cradled within the arms of the wishbone is the spinal cord which carries nerve messages up and down from the brain to all parts of the body. In between every vertebra in the spine is a cushion of jelly (the disc) which acts as a shock absorber and cushions each and every step. When the disc bulges backwards it traps the nerve where it leaves the spinal canal and causes pressure and pain. Once the disc is on the move what we do with the spine changes what happens to the disc. Sitting on an easy chair like a banana allows it to bulge backwards further and cause more pain. See Referred pain, Back pain, Sciatic nerve.

Osteoporosis is a health condition suffered by many today of which the hallmark is the loss of the normal bone density and the subsequent fragility of the skeletal bones.

Because of the loss of or the reduction in the bone density in the original skeletal structure, the skeletal bones lose their strength putting the osteoporotic bones at a much higher risk for fracture.

But osteoporosis leads to bones that look like a sponge. These bones are abnormally porous and begin in the worst-case situations to look a lot like Swiss cheese. Osteoporosis weakens the entire skeletal system and puts the sufferer at great risk for bone fracture.

Pain can be experienced as a result of old age, physical illness, extensive exercise, overwork, heavy lifting, strained muscles or broken bones. Pain triggers a region of the brain known as the lateral occipital complex, reducing a person’s ability to concentrate and accurately recognize images, i.e. our ability to think and perceive properly. Pain also interferes with our ability to cope with life emotionally, e.g. sadness, irritation and perhaps depression and hopelessness. Supermarkets and pharmacies have aisles and aisles of pills, powders and bandages to help with pain relief. Some common pain relief medication can cause mild side effects like drowsiness or nausea. Other pain relief medications are prescribed and can have even more serious side effects. Drugs like vicodin and percocet are prescription, heavy duty narcotic pain relief pills that are addictive and dangerous if not taken carefully. New studies suggest those drugs that block pain could also be stimulating receptors that cause pain as well.

Osteoporosis is a health condition in which the bone density in the skeletal system is reduced putting you at increased risk for bone fractures and the subsequent morbidity and mortality associated with fractures.

There are several osteoporosis risk factors that are not modifiable, such as being of the female gender, being a member of the Asian or Caucasian race or even having a small and think body frame, but there are many osteoporosis risk factors that you most certainly can do something about.
