Triphala exactly means ‘three fruits’ i.e. three myrobalans. It is a combination of the 3 essential myrobalans. These are:- (i) Amla or Emblica officinalis Properties of Triphala (i) Amla or commonly known as Indian gooseberry, is the richest source of vitamin C or ascorbic acid in the world. It is a green colored fruit that has an amla or sour taste due to its acidic ingredients. Amla fruit is sheet or cooling and stimulating. It also has laxative and purgative properties. Since it has good amount of vitamin C or ascorbic acid, amla speed up blood clotting and heals injuries. In some cases, amla has been used to renovate lost sexual energy in men and women with success. (ii) Baheda is a tickta or bitter herb, also commonly known as Bhibitaki. Like amla, it also has helpful effects in healing of wounds and injuries. It is a tonic and mild laxative. It can lessen fevers, and hence it is an antipyretic in nature. (iii) Haritaki is one of the lightest and safest laxatives used in Ayurvedic medicine. It prevents blood clotting. Harad is a stomachic; it perks up the functioning of the stomach and facilitates digestion. Haritaki is used to improve all dietary imbalances in the system, and looks after the complete digestive, absorptive, assimilative and excretory procedure. Hence, Triphala or trifla that is made up of these 3 valuable components is a real boon of Ayurveda to man kind.
