Boredom is one of the main reasons most people fail to lose weight. If you’re like most people, you know exactly what this feels like. Everything begins in front of a mirror. You look at yourself and you swear to lose that pouch hanging over your jeans. Then you set out a goal of how you’re going to achieve this. Some people start simple. Jog a mile a day, eat egg whites and toast for breakfast, salads for lunch, and lean meats and vegetables for dinner. Stick to this routine, and in about a month, you should start seeing results. That’s what should happen, but it never quite works out that way. Towards the end of the month, you start falling behind schedule. You start eating a little bit more and jog a little bit less. Why not? You’re doing well. You’ve already lost about 3 lbs. You deserve a break. Besides, you could use some new tunes on your iPod. So, once you’ve got your music shuffled you’ll be back before you know it. Then another day goes by…then a week… and soon the 3 lbs. you’ve lost has found its way back to your hips again. Admit it. We’ve all been victims of routine redundancy — a.k.a. boredom — which often halts our efforts towards any forms of diet and exercise. If only there are fun ways to get in shape… Well, as a matter of fact, there’s hope for you yet. Try some of these perky tips on some fun ways to get in shape. They’re sure to get you springing out of bed with excitement. • In each small piece of paper, write down 30 different ways you enjoy working out, and be very specific. For example, “Jogging twice around the neighborhood,” or “Climbing up and down office staircase,” etc… Just have fun with this and maybe add one or two things you haven’t done before. Then fold each piece of paper and put into a small bowl. Unfold a piece of paper every morning after waking up, and be ready for your surprise workout for the day. • Enroll yourself in a short-term class that does not necessarily call for you to be a contortionist. The best place to look for these classes is through your community college or parks and recreation services. They are inexpensive and don’t last for very long, usually around 6-9 sessions. You may want to try out a karate class first, then kickboxing, then be a bit more daring and go for ballroom dancing! You just never know where your workout will take you, and you’ll have such a blast, it wouldn’t even matter. • Ever feel like your workout buddy is getting just as old as your exercise routine? Widening your circle of friends could mean not having to make up an excuse not to show up at the gym, and not because you don’t want to work out, but because you no longer want to work out with the same person. So, instead of snubbing off the person next to you at spinning class, find out her secrets to looking good. Who knows, she may share some fun ways to get in shape.
