In our economic driven world many persons work constantly on their feet with little time sitting down, always on the go. When we finally get home and try to sit and relax, the kids are home, your toddler wants to play, and by the end of the night your feet hurt, head aches, and you are anything but relaxed.

One option of relaxation that can be easily provided by your spouse, a friend, or partner is a nice foot massage at the end of the day. There are five easy steps, when done correctly, will ease the tension and relief aching feet.

The first step is soaking the receiver’s feet in warm water with Epsom salt. Epsom salt can be purchased at any local grocery store or pharmacy (you will usually find this near aspirins, Tylenol, Advil, etc… since Epsom is commonly used for muscle aches). After the feet are finished soaking, completely dry the feet.

When finished soaking and drying begin to rub the top of the foot gently gliding your fingers over the entire foot. You may want to apply some form of massage cream or oil. If using massage cream before moving to the next step make sure the cream is fully absorbed. The duration of the rub highly depends upon the receiver and the individual performing the massage.

The third step in perfecting a foot massage is moving to the sole of the foot. Apply more pressure during this step into the muscles, however apply less pressure around tendons and joints. Move slowly, and make sure you have covered every muscle as you move to the toes, which is the forth step. Take your time don’t rush. One of the reasons why some massages are not as effective as another is the time you spend in each step. This does not mean you take 30 minutes in each step. One can maximize time and effectiveness through thorough rubbing of each section.

The final and most important aspect of performing an excellent foot massage is gently rotating the feet . The feet, as other portions of the body, have their comfortable range of motion. Use the full range of motion while massaging the muscles as they stretch and relax. The more you practice the better the foot massage and the more relaxed your partner will feel at the end of a long day, long run, or day of playing sports.
