Ordinary Images Constantly Influence Our Lives When the woman claimed she didn’t have “images” because she didn’t “see pictures” when she closed her eyes, I was very pleased. That’s because it’s always fun to take a group of imagery workshop participants through an animal exercise in which I ask everyone to close their eyes and imagine that a baby animal is right outside the room. Then when I suggest that the door opens and the animal enters, the smiles begin. Every single person, even those who don’t “visualize” things in their inner landscape, have a great time.

At the end of the nineteenth century, Frederick Winslow Taylor went to work at Bethlehem Steel. Upon observing the workers shoveling coal, Taylor had an idea. He assigned each worker a shovel that was of a size and weight ideally suited to the worker’s own body structure. With the new shovels, the workers became triply effective, Bethlehem Steel was able to reduce its cost by half, and get the same amount of work out of 140 employees that it once got out of 400.

Mental illness and mood disorders have been with us for ever and affect all living creatures on this earth. Funnily enough can you imagine a dog going to its own clinic for therapy? What about the lioness in the wilderness whose lone cub was killed by inadvertently going astray from the comfort of its mother and the available therapy she requires to recover her loss? Hardly imaginable eh?
We are not similar to those instances of aloneness, yet society has made us as alone as those two examples and many of us never find solace and we live forever in our darkened caves.
